Thrill Gauran”****in”teed: The Departed.
May be it is the dearth of good Hollywood thrillers these days that makes “The Departed” a truly enjoyable movie. But it keeps you at the edge of your seat and sometimes even makes you want to jump out of it. With an enviable star cast and stellar performances, the characters make the movie not the regular “police and crime” drama. Though the movie wallows itself in a crusade of invectives, it captures the parallel insanity of the enforcers of law and perpetuators of crime. It is a “find the rat and kill it” case. Of course the rats are many and so are the kills.
“The Departed” revolves around the Irish American Mob gang in Boston which is controlled by the madman Costello (Jack Nicholson). The Police forces of Boston are all out to obliterate this organized group of criminals. Emerges the stories of two young policemen, each trying to conceal a stark and contrasted personality beneath. While Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) finds himself accepting to take on as an undercover police agent in a diabolic mob gang, Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) brazenly evades and leaks futile police attempts to his Godfather Costello.
It is a story of Betrayals and killing Loyalty, a fallen romance and sparked passion, some dark truths and heavy lies.
The performances hit you on the face. Jack Nicholson is at his diabolic and lewd best. Though I am a Matt Damon fan, this movie was a winner for DiCaprio who finally emerges as a virile and mature actor as he beautifully portrays the tirade of emotional angst. Matt Damon, I believe lost out on characterization of his role but as usual gives more than his 100 percent. The cameos played by Martin Sheen (Captain Queenan) and Mark Wahlberg (Sgt. Dignam) are worth a mention and more. Vera Farmiga as the shrink for the policemen adds the feminine life to the male movie but her role loses way in the end.
I hear that Martin Scorsese did a poor imitation of a Hong Kong movie, but for a person who hasn’t seen the “Infernal Affairs” this movie is a total captivation. If you can sit through the innumerable ****s and other vituperations in the movie, you will love some of the witty dialogues and Costello’s bad mouth. I shall never forget how the movie began “I don’t want to be a product of my environment, I want my environment to be a product of me”. Atleast one Oscar please!
I‘d say “Don’t miss it”.

On your reco, I saw the movie - my 1st Holloywood movie in the US (come to think it - I saw more of those at E-Square!)..
Anyway, great movie - like a pumped up version of RGV's Satya.
It's raw in its brutatlity and blood bath. Maybe that how reality is. But then again, reality is someting that we see only in movies - isn't it ironic?
